Early Leak Detection is Key It's no easy task to identify hidden water leaks in your home. But it is an essential role for a homeowner. If left undetected, leaks could potentially evolve into a health hazard with the growth of mould, trigger a plumber’s emergency and result in a costly small fortune in repairs due to serious water damage in your home.   At Martin Plumbing, we understand the importance of early leak detection and calling in your local Plumbers before the damage escalates. By having an understanding of these signs, you will have the upper hand with insights that empower you to detect hidden water damage early, and call the plumbers in at the first stage of a leak, avoiding potential damage and costly repairs.   Increase in Water Bill Charges If you have been billed with a spike in water charges, and have no explanation for the additional usage, it’s time to investigate.   Run a Meter Test If you notice a spike in water bill charges without changes in your water use, this is a clear indication that further investigation is required. A good start would be to conduct a water meter test yourself. The best time to do this test is during the night when everyone is asleep or when the house is empty as water will be turned off for some time.   Record the Usage Locate your water meter, usually they have a set of numbers displaying your water usage. Record this number as it will serve as a baseline for after the test. Go through the home and make sure you turn off each water source within your home inside and out. There should be no water-consuming devices on. Allow for a minimum of 2-3 hours to pass ensuring that no water has been used over this period. Go back to the water meter, if the water usage number you recorded has changed, this indicates a hidden leak.   Turn Off The Water Main At this point, you are able to investigate further by turning off the water main valve which isolates potential leak areas. If the meterage goes up here,  registering water usage despite the main valve being shut off, you have a water main leak in the supply line between the meter and your home.
